Collection: Sunglasses

Discover our carefully curated selection of pre-owned sunglasses: archive designer frames, classic silhouettes, rare limited editions and considered eyewear from the world's most celebrated houses. Every piece is hand-evaluated by our team on avenue Louise and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Because the right pair of sunglasses is not simply eye protection — it is the face's most considered accessory and the one that most immediately transforms a look.

Pre-owned designer sunglasses: from archive frames to contemporary luxury eyewear

Sunglasses occupy a unique position in the accessories hierarchy: they are the one piece you put on before leaving the house and the first thing another person's eye goes to when they look at your face. This combination of visibility and intimacy has made sunglasses the accessory category most directly associated with personal style and self-projection, and it has attracted some of fashion's most ambitious design intelligence across the past century of modern eyewear.

The great moments in sunglasses design history are inseparable from their wearers: the oversized frames that Jackie Kennedy used to create the most imitated look in post-war style; the tiny oval frames that brought 1960s op-art aesthetics to the face; the aviator that translated military utility into one of the most enduring luxury eyewear silhouettes in history; Andy Warhol's round frames that made self-effacement into its own kind of statement. In fashion, the sunglass's design history maps almost perfectly onto the history of how each decade understood the relationship between concealment and display, between the face as canvas and the face as self.

At Les Enfants d'Édouard, our pre-owned sunglasses selection spans archive frames from the great fashion houses (Chanel, Dior, Prada, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Celine) and dedicated eyewear specialists (Oliver Peoples, Linda Farrow, Cutler and Gross), with a particular focus on discontinued frames, archive colorways and pieces from significant creative periods that are no longer available at retail.

Our sunglasses categories

Classic and timeless frames

The cat-eye, the aviator, the round frame, the rectangular — the four silhouettes that between them have defined luxury eyewear since the mid-20th century. Archive examples of each from the great fashion houses represent the most enduringly wearable tier of our sunglasses selection.

Oversized and statement frames

The oversized sunglass — from Jackie Kennedy's signature look to the dramatically proportioned frames of Celine under Phoebe Philo and the statement eyewear of Dior and Gucci — represents the sunglasses category at its most visually assertive. Archive oversized frames from significant creative periods are among the most sought-after pieces in our selection.

Archive fashion house frames

Chanel's interlocking CC logo frames, Prada's minimalist and conceptual frames from the Miuccia era, Celine's clean architectural lines from the Philo period, Dior's baroque and romantic constructions from the Galliano years, and the archive frames of Gucci's Tom Ford and Alessandro Michele eras represent the most design-significant tier of our sunglasses selection.

Contemporary luxury eyewear specialists

Oliver Peoples, Cutler and Gross, Linda Farrow and Jacques Marie Mage represent the specialist eyewear houses whose frames combine exceptional optical craftsmanship with design intelligence equal to the best fashion house eyewear. Pre-owned frames from these specialists in excellent condition represent exceptional value relative to their new retail prices.

How to evaluate pre-owned sunglasses

Evaluating pre-owned sunglasses requires attention to several combined criteria. Here are the 7 checkpoints we systematically verify in our atelier on avenue Louise.

1. The signature and attribution

Every frame carries the house name on the temple (arm), typically accompanied by a model name or number and the size designation. We verify the signature against our database of confirmed authentic frames for the specific house and era.

2. The frame material and condition

Frame materials — acetate, metal, titanium, combination — are assessed for their specific condition criteria. Acetate frames should be assessed for any chips, cracks or significant scratches; metal frames for any bending or distortion and finish condition; hinge condition and smooth operation are assessed for all frame types.

3. The lens condition

Lens condition is the primary functional concern in pre-owned sunglasses. We assess both lenses for scratches, chips, any coating delamination or cloudiness. Minor surface scratches that do not significantly affect vision are disclosed and graded; any significant scratch that creates visual distortion represents a functional issue requiring disclosure.

4. The hinge condition and alignment

Hinges should open and close smoothly, hold the temple in its intended position when open, and close cleanly when folded. Any looseness, misalignment or resistance in the hinge mechanism is assessed and disclosed. Hinge adjustment is a standard optician's procedure for minor issues.

5. The nose pad condition

For metal frames with adjustable nose pads, pad condition and the functionality of pad adjustment are assessed. Discoloured or deteriorated nose pads are replaceable and this is noted where relevant.

6. The UV and optical quality

For any sunglasses sold through our boutique, we verify that the lenses provide adequate UV protection — the primary functional requirement of any pair of sunglasses. Original lenses from major fashion houses meet CE and UV400 standards; any replaced lenses are specifically noted and assessed.

7. The overall condition and wearability

We assess and honestly grade the overall condition of every frame, distinguishing clearly between cosmetic wear (minor frame scratches that do not affect wearability) and functional issues (lens scratches, hinge problems) that require disclosure.

Our method: at Les Enfants d'Édouard, every pair of sunglasses undergoes a three-stage examination — visual inspection, technical verification (signature, frame, lenses, hinges) and wearability assessment. Every authenticated piece comes with our certificate of authenticity.

Sizing notes

Sunglass sizing is typically printed on the inside of the temple in the format: lens width — bridge width — temple length (e.g. 54-18-140). The lens width is the most critical measurement for face proportion; the bridge width determines how high or low the frame sits on the nose. We provide the full size designation for every frame in our selection. Face shape is as important as face size in finding the right frame — our team is happy to advise on frame selection for specific face shapes during a boutique visit or by appointment.

Why invest in pre-owned designer sunglasses

Pre-owned designer sunglasses represent one of the most accessible and most practically useful entry points in the luxury secondhand accessories market. A pair of Celine frames from the Phoebe Philo era — clean, architectural, discontinued and increasingly rare — found in excellent condition at a fraction of their original retail price, represents both a design object of genuine cultural significance and one of the most immediately wearable and daily-relevant accessories available. Archive frames from significant creative periods are genuinely irreplaceable at retail and their secondary market value reflects this scarcity.

For those wishing to sell pre-owned sunglasses, we offer an expert consignment service.

Care and maintenance of pre-owned sunglasses

For all frames, store in a hard case when not in use — the single most effective protection against frame distortion and lens scratching. Never place lenses face-down on any surface. Clean lenses with a microfibre cloth and appropriate lens-cleaning solution — never with clothing or paper products, which can scratch lens coatings.

For acetate frames, avoid prolonged exposure to heat (dashboard, beach in direct sun), which can cause acetate to warp. If frames have distorted slightly, an optician can adjust them back with gentle heat application.

For metal frames, have hinges tightened periodically by an optician if any looseness develops. Avoid contact with salt water, which can accelerate corrosion in some metal alloys.

Frequently asked questions about pre-owned sunglasses

Which pre-owned sunglasses are most sought-after?

Celine frames from the Phoebe Philo era (particularly the CL41068, 41401 and other architectural styles), Prada frames from Miuccia's most conceptually significant collections, Chanel classic CC-logo and quilted frames, Dior archive frames from the Galliano era in distinctive colorways, Oliver Peoples Sheldrake and Gregory Peck styles in discontinued colourways, and Cutler and Gross archive frames in acetate.

Can pre-owned sunglasses have their lenses replaced?

Yes — in most cases, prescription or tinted lenses can be fitted into pre-owned designer frames by a qualified optician, provided the frame is in good condition. This can transform an attractive pre-owned frame into a personalised prescription eyewear piece. We can advise on which frames in our selection are suitable for lens replacement on request.
