Pre-owned jewellery at Les Enfants d'Édouard: fashion house signatures and fine jewellery

Jewellery occupies a unique position in the pre-owned luxury market. Unlike clothing or bags, which are subject to seasonal reinvention and trend cycles, jewellery — whether a Chanel camellia brooch from 1985, a Hermès Clic H enamel bracelet or a Tiffany & Co. Return to Tiffany heart pendant — carries a timelessness that makes it among the most enduringly valuable and most personally meaningful of all secondhand luxury purchases. A piece of fashion house jewellery is not simply an accessory that completes an outfit: it is a wearable emblem of a specific design vocabulary, often produced in limited quantities and discontinued after a season or two, making earlier examples increasingly rare and sought-after as the years pass.

At Les Enfants d'Édouard, our pre-owned jewellery selection spans two complementary territories. The first is fashion house costume jewellery: the signed pieces produced by the great fashion houses — Chanel's pearl sautoirs and CC earrings, Hermès's Clic H and Collier de chien bracelets, Dior's archive brooches and necklaces, Yves Saint Laurent's iconic 1970s and 1980s pieces, and the contemporary jewellery of Loewe, Bottega Veneta and Celine — that translate each house's design vocabulary into wearable, signable objects. The second is fine jewellery: gold, silver and gemstone pieces from the great jewellery houses and independent makers, evaluated for material quality, craftsmanship and condition.

Every piece in our jewellery selection is evaluated for authenticity, condition and design significance before being offered for sale. We authenticate signed pieces against our database of verified examples, assess condition with the same rigour we apply to every other category, and grade each piece with the honesty that allows a buyer to make a fully informed decision.

Our jewellery categories

Fashion house signed jewellery

Chanel's camellia brooches, pearl sautoirs and CC earrings; Hermès's Clic H enamel bracelets, Kelly bracelets and Collier de chien cuffs; Dior's archive brooches and statement necklaces; Yves Saint Laurent's iconic 1970s–1980s pieces in gilded metal and enamel; Loewe's Anagram earrings and rings; and the contemporary signed jewellery of Bottega Veneta, Celine and The Row. These are pieces that carry the full design authority of their houses in their most intimate and personal form.

Brooches and pins

The brooch is fashion jewellery's most historically rich category — from the Chanel camellia and the Dior archive brooches to the costume jewellery masterworks of the great 20th-century houses, brooches represent some of the most wearable and most collectible pieces in our jewellery selection.

Necklaces and pendants

From Chanel's layered pearl sautoirs to the Hermès Chaine d'ancre, from the statement necklaces of Yves Saint Laurent's Berber-inspired collections to the fine gold chains of contemporary luxury jewellers. Necklaces carry more of a wearer's personal expression than perhaps any other jewellery piece, and our selection reflects this range.

Earrings

Chanel's interlocking CC drop earrings, Hermès's Clic H and Chaine d'ancre earrings, Dior's statement clip-on pieces from the couture archive, and the contemporary earrings of Loewe, Bottega Veneta and Celine represent the signed fashion house tier. Fine jewellery earrings in gold, silver and gemstones complete a selection designed to offer pieces for every context and budget.

Bracelets and cuffs

The Hermès Clic H in enamel — one of the most recognisable luxury accessories in the world — the Kelly double tour leather bracelet, the Chanel quilted cuff, and the Cartier Love and Juste un Clou bracelets represent the most consistently traded pieces in our bracelet selection. Fine gold bangles and cuffs complete a category that offers some of the most enduring value propositions in pre-owned luxury jewellery.

Rings

From the Cartier Love ring and Juste un Clou to the Hermès Collier de chien ring and the Bottega Veneta Knot ring, our ring selection includes the most coveted signed pieces alongside fine jewellery in gold, silver and precious stones. Rings are the most personally sized of all jewellery pieces and we provide specific size information for every piece in our selection.

How to evaluate a pre-owned jewellery piece

Evaluating a pre-owned jewellery piece requires attention to several combined criteria. No single point is sufficient — it is the coherence of the whole that matters. Here are the 7 checkpoints we systematically verify in our atelier on avenue Louise.

1. The signature and attribution

Every signed fashion house jewellery piece carries an identifying signature — typically engraved or stamped on the reverse of a brooch, the inner surface of a ring, the clasp of a necklace or the fastening of a bracelet. We verify the signature against our database of confirmed authentic examples for the specific house and era, checking typeface, placement and depth of engraving.

2. The metal quality and hallmarks

For fine jewellery, hallmarks indicating metal purity (750 for 18-carat gold, 925 for sterling silver, 950 for platinum) are verified. For fashion house gilded metal pieces, we assess the quality and consistency of the plating, any tarnishing or loss of finish, and the weight and substance of the base metal.

3. The stone quality (where applicable)

Gemstones in fine jewellery pieces are assessed for clarity, colour, cut quality and — where certificates are present — the documentation of their quality grades. For fashion house pieces featuring glass or synthetic stones, we assess the condition, clarity and security of setting of all stones.

4. The construction and setting quality

The quality of stone settings, clasp mechanisms, hinge points and any movable elements is assessed in detail. Prong settings should hold stones securely without scratching the wearer; claw settings should be even and well-formed; bezel settings should be consistently and cleanly finished.

5. The clasp and closure condition

Clasps, toggles and closure mechanisms for necklaces and bracelets are assessed for smooth operation and secure function. A clasp that does not close and hold securely requires intervention before the piece can be safely worn and must be disclosed.

6. The surface condition

We assess the overall surface condition of every piece — any scratches, dents, enamel chips, plating loss or tarnishing — and grade these clearly. For enamel pieces (Hermès Clic H, Chanel enamel jewellery), we specifically assess the integrity of the enamel surface, as chips or cracks significantly affect both appearance and value.

7. The dating code (where applicable)

Chanel jewellery has carried a dating code since 1985 (two digits for year, CC, one digit for season) that allows precise dating of each piece. Hermès jewellery carries house stamps that can be used for attribution. These codes and stamps are verified and used to date each piece accurately in our descriptions.

Our method: at Les Enfants d'Édouard, every jewellery piece undergoes a three-stage examination — visual inspection, technical verification (signature, metal, stones, construction, condition) and design significance assessment. Every authenticated piece comes with our certificate of authenticity.

Bracelet size notes

For rigid bracelets (Hermès Clic H, Cartier Love), the interior circumference determines fit — we provide this measurement for every rigid bracelet in our selection. Hermès Clic H comes in sizes Small (S), Medium (M) and Large (L), corresponding to wrist circumferences of approximately 14–15 cm, 15–17 cm and 17–19 cm respectively. Cartier Love bracelets are sized in millimetres of interior diameter (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) — we always specify the exact size for every Cartier piece in our selection.

Why invest in pre-owned jewellery

Pre-owned jewellery represents one of the most compelling value propositions in the secondhand luxury market for several reasons that compound each other. Fashion house signed jewellery — particularly Hermès, Chanel and Cartier — appreciates reliably over time, driven by limited production runs, frequent discontinuation and a devoted collector base that sustains demand in excess of available supply. The Hermès Clic H bracelet that retailed for €395 a decade ago now trades on the secondary market at between €300 and €500 depending on condition and colourway, with rare or discontinued colourways commanding significant premiums. The Chanel pearl sautoir and the Chanel CC brooch have similarly appreciated as early Lagerfeld-era examples become increasingly difficult to source in excellent condition.

Beyond the investment argument, pre-owned jewellery offers something equally important: access to pieces that are no longer available at retail — discontinued colourways of the Hermès Clic H, early Chanel jewellery from the 1980s and 1990s, YSL Berber pieces from the 1970s — whose combination of design significance and practical unwearability (they are made to be worn, not simply admired) makes them among the most personally rewarding purchases in the entire luxury secondary market.

Our jewellery selection in Brussels, avenue Louise

Care and maintenance of pre-owned jewellery

For fashion house gilded metal jewellery, avoid contact with perfume, perspiration, hand cream and household chemicals, which accelerate tarnishing and plating degradation. Store separately in individual pouches to prevent scratching. Clean with a soft, dry cloth — never with chemical jewellery cleaners, which can strip plating.

For enamel jewellery (Hermès Clic H, Chanel enamel pieces), protect from sharp impacts that can chip enamel and from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade enamel colours over time. Store separately and handle with particular care.

For fine gold and silver jewellery, clean periodically with a specialist jewellery cloth or mild jewellery cleaning solution appropriate to the specific metal. Remove before swimming, showering or exercising — chlorine and perspiration accelerate tarnishing in silver and can damage gold alloys.

For gemstone pieces, store separately to prevent stones from scratching each other. Most gemstones can be cleaned gently with a soft brush and warm soapy water, but certain stones (emeralds, pearls, opals) require specialist care and should never be subjected to ultrasonic cleaning.

Frequently asked questions about pre-owned jewellery

Which pre-owned jewellery pieces are most sought-after?

Hermès Clic H enamel bracelets in discontinued colourways, Hermès Kelly double tour leather bracelets, Chanel camellia brooches and CC drop earrings from the Lagerfeld era, Cartier Love and Juste un Clou bracelets and rings, YSL Berber necklaces and gilded pieces from the 1970s–1980s, and Dior archive brooches from the couture collections.

How do I know if a piece of fashion house jewellery is authentic?

Every signed piece in our selection has been authenticated against our database of verified examples. Authentication markers vary by house: Chanel jewellery carries a stamped "CHANEL" signature and, since 1985, a dating code; Hermès pieces carry a stamped house name and, on some pieces, a season or collection code; Cartier pieces carry engraved hallmarks, serial numbers and the maison name. We verify all these markers and provide authentication documentation with every signed piece we sell.

Can pre-owned jewellery be resized?

Plain gold and silver rings can typically be resized by a specialist jeweller within 1–2 sizes without compromising the piece. Rings with stones around the entire band (full eternity rings) and branded rings with continuous engraving (Cartier Love, Cartier Trinity) cannot be resized without damaging the design. We advise on resize possibilities for any specific ring in our selection on request.

What warranty do you offer on pre-owned jewellery?
