The history of Bottega Veneta, from Vicenza to the world

Founded in 1966 in Vicenza, in the Veneto region of northern Italy, Bottega Veneta — literally "Venetian workshop" — was established as a leather goods atelier working with local artisans. The house quickly built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, and its iconic intrecciato weave — in which fine strips of leather are woven together by hand — became its defining signature. Acquired by Kering in 2001, the house was entrusted to Tomas Maier, who served as creative director for 17 years (2001–2018). Under Maier, Bottega Veneta became synonymous with quiet luxury: impeccable materials, masterful construction, and a total absence of visible logos. In 2018, Daniel Lee was appointed creative director, triggering a cultural earthquake. His debut collection introduced the Pouch clutch, the Cassette bag, padded mules and oversized silhouettes that became some of the most coveted pieces of the 2019–2021 period. Lee departed in 2021, succeeded by Matthieu Blazy, who deepened the house's artisanal commitment with a quieter, more architectural approach. 1. The intrecciato weave

Bottega Veneta's intrecciato weave is executed entirely by hand: fine strips of leather approximately 1 cm wide are woven in a precise diagonal pattern. The authentic weave is perfectly regular, with strips of identical width and a consistent 45° angle throughout. Each intersection is flat and tight. A weave that is uneven, loose or machine-stitched is an immediate red flag.

2. The interior label and serial number

Authentic bags carry a sewn interior label reading "Bottega Veneta / Made in Italy" in a precise, clean typeface. Since the 2000s, a serial number stamped on a leather tag inside the bag allows the piece to be dated and identified.

3. The leather quality

Bottega Veneta uses exclusively premium leathers — lambskin, nappa, calfskin — from selected Italian tanneries. The leather should feel exceptionally soft and supple, with a natural, clean scent. It should never feel plasticky, stiff or artificially glossy.

4. The hardware
