Our Celine selection: Luggage Totes, Classic Box bags, Triomphe and Ava pieces from the Phoebe Philo and Hedi Slimane eras, each piece rigorously authenticated by our experts before being offered for sale in our boutique on Avenue Louise, Brussels.
The History of Celine, from 1945 to the Present Day
Celine was founded in Paris in 1945 by Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard, initially as a made-to-measure children's shoe shop on rue de Rivoli. The business expanded rapidly: by 1948, three additional boutiques had opened, and in 1960 Celine moved into women's ready-to-wear. In 1963, the first women's shoe line was launched. The 1960s and 1970s saw Celine develop the equestrian aesthetic that would define the house for decades: the Sulky logo, depicting a horse-drawn racing vehicle used in harness racing, appeared on bags, belts and accessories, reflecting the sporting interests of Richard Vipiana.
According to house legend, the double-C logo was inspired by the chains surrounding the Arc de Triomphe, which Céline Vipiana noticed when her car broke down in front of the monument. This motif, reimagined by successive creative directors, became the Triomphe hardware that defines many of the house's most recognisable accessories today. In 1996, Celine was acquired by LVMH. Under LVMH's ownership, the brand expanded internationally and began investing seriously in its leather goods and accessories categories.
The defining moment of Celine's modern history came in 2008, when Phoebe Philo was appointed creative director. Philo, who had previously worked at Chloé, brought an architectural minimalism and a fierce intelligence to the house that transformed it into the defining label of a particular generation of women: educated, independent, interested in design. Her Luggage Tote (2010), Classic Box bag and Phantom bag became instant cult objects. The "Philo Effect" was real and quantifiable: sales tripled during her tenure. She left in 2018.
Hedi Slimane succeeded Philo in 2018 and immediately removed the accent from Céline, creating controversy. His vision, drawing on his Parisian rock-and-roll aesthetic from his Saint Laurent years, produced a new generation of bags including the Triomphe (2019), the 16 Bag and the Ava. Slimane left in early 2024 and was succeeded by Michael Rider, who joined from Ralph Lauren and has been praised for his reverence for the Philo legacy while adding his own clear editorial vision.
Iconic Celine Pieces
The Luggage Tote: Philo's Masterpiece (2010)
Introduced by Phoebe Philo in 2010, the Luggage Tote is one of the most influential bag designs of the twenty-first century. Its distinctive face-like silhouette (two top handles suggesting eyes, a middle zip suggesting a smile), structured body and unlined interior are entirely unlike anything else in the luxury market. Produced in smooth, pebbled and exotic leathers in dozens of colourways, the Luggage Tote is the centrepiece of the Philo archive and commands significant premiums on the secondary market, particularly in discontinued leathers and colourways from 2010-2014.
The Classic Box: Minimalism Distilled (2011)
Also from the Philo era, the Classic Box is a structured, boxy flap bag with a simple rectangular closure and a cross-body strap. Its extreme restraint and precise proportions made it the bag of choice for architects, gallery owners and fashion insiders who wanted to signal taste without ostentation. In smooth calfskin, particularly in black or tan, the Classic Box is among the most coveted vintage Celine pieces. Its clean lines make even well-used examples look intentional.
The Phantom: The Oversized Tote (2012)
The Phantom, introduced in 2012, is an oversized version of the Luggage Tote with distinctive wing-like flaps on each side that allow the bag to expand. It was adopted immediately by the fashion industry as the ultimate working woman's bag: roomy enough for a laptop and files, but visually striking enough to function as a statement piece. In grained leather or calfskin, the Phantom is a significant Philo-era object.
The Triomphe: Slimane's Signature (2019)
Introduced by Hedi Slimane in 2019, the Triomphe is a structured flap bag with a distinctive double-C hardware clasp inspired by the original Céline Vipiana logo. Its clean, slightly retro silhouette and chain strap have made it one of the most successful bag launches of the 2020s. Available in smooth leather, canvas and Triomphe monogram canvas, the Triomphe has already established a strong secondary market, particularly in classic colourways from the first three seasons of production.
The Ava: Modern Hobo (2019)
The Ava, introduced by Hedi Slimane in 2019, is a crescent-shaped bag drawing on the hobo silhouettes of the 1990s. Its simple curved form, zip top and single strap have made it particularly popular with a younger audience. Frequently photographed on Kaia Gerber, the Ava is one of the most recognisable Celine bags of its generation.
The Belt Bag: Philo's Utility Object (2014)
The Belt Bag, designed by Phoebe Philo around 2014, is a structured shoulder bag with a distinctive twisted buckle closure and a strong architectural quality. Its functional aesthetic, made entirely from smooth leather without visible hardware ornamentation, is the purest expression of Philo's philosophy. The Belt Bag in good condition, particularly in neutral or discontinued colourways, is among the most sought-after items from the Philo archive.
How to Authenticate a Celine Bag
1. The Interior Label
The interior label reads "Céline" (with accent, Philo era) or "Celine" (without accent, Slimane era and beyond). The label is heat-stamped into the leather lining or on a leather tab. The typeface, letter spacing and depth of impression are precisely consistent across authentic pieces. Note: the removal of the accent in 2018 is a reliable era marker.
2. The Serial Number
Most Celine bags carry a serial number embossed on a leather tab inside the bag. The format typically consists of a combination of letters and numbers indicating the production period and style. On Philo-era bags, the serial number is often located inside a pocket or on a leather tab near the zip. Its absence on a supposedly modern bag is a red flag.
3. The Zipper
Celine zippers typically do not carry a brand name on the face of the slider, but feature a single digit on the front and an O- or D-shaped pull. The zipper should operate smoothly and firmly. Any branding inconsistency, stiff operation or cheap-feeling pull is a warning sign. On the Luggage Tote, the smile zip should operate with very precise tension.
4. The Triomphe Hardware
On Triomphe bags, the double-C clasp must show clean, sharply defined letters with equal weight and spacing. The clasp should operate with a firm snap and show no wobble or looseness. The hardware should be uniformly finished with no peeling or inconsistent colour.
5. The Leather Quality
Celine leather is consistently of high quality: smooth calfskin should be uniform in grain, colour and thickness. Pebbled leather has a precise, regular texture. Any synthetic feel, uneven grain or colour inconsistency indicates a counterfeit. The unlined interior of the Luggage Tote should reveal the clean reverse side of the leather.
6. The Stitching
Celine stitching is tight, even and calibrated in colour to complement the leather. On the Classic Box and Belt Bag, exterior saddle stitching must be absolutely straight and consistent. Any deviation, loose thread or irregular tension is a sign of inauthenticity.
7. The Luggage Tote Structure
The Luggage Tote should hold its distinctive face-like silhouette firmly when empty. The two top handles should be stiff, even and symmetrically positioned. The bottom should be flat without visible base feet. The smile zip should arc in a precise semicircle. Any deformation, uneven handles or distorted smile arc should raise concern.
8. The Triomphe Canvas Print
On bags using the Triomphe monogram canvas, the double-C pattern should be precisely regular, with clean edges and consistent colour. Any blurring, misalignment or off-tone printing is a sign of a counterfeit.
Our method: at Les Enfants d'Édouard, every piece undergoes a three-stage examination: visual inspection, verification of technical markers (interior label with or without accent, zipper details, hardware precision and leather quality), and cross-referencing against our reference archive. Where any doubt arises, we consult a specialist partner in Paris. Every authenticated piece is delivered with our certificate of authenticity.

Why Invest in a Vintage Celine Piece
The "Philo Effect" is now a well-documented resale phenomenon. Phoebe Philo's tenure at Celine (2008-2018) produced some of the most intellectually and aesthetically significant bags and ready-to-wear of the twenty-first century. Luggage Totes in discontinued leathers (tricolour, exotic, suede) and Classic Box bags in good condition have shown significant appreciation since Philo's departure. Belt Bags, Phantom bags and Trio bags from the Philo era are all undergoing active collector reassessment.
The Slimane era (2018-2024) is already producing its first wave of collector interest, with early Triomphe bags from 2019-2020 in the most sought-after colourways beginning to show premiums. If you are looking to value or sell a Celine piece, we offer an expert consignment service with a complimentary valuation.

Care and Maintenance of Your Celine Pieces
Smooth leather bags: store stuffed with tissue paper in the dust bag. The Luggage Tote's unlined interior means the leather is in direct contact with contents; use a small internal organiser to prevent scratches from keys and pens. Buff with a dry cloth after use. Condition periodically with a fine leather conditioner.
Suede pieces: treat with a protective spray before first use. Brush gently with a suede brush to restore the nap after each use. Keep away from moisture. Store in the dust bag away from direct light, which fades suede.
Ready-to-wear: Philo-era Celine ready-to-wear in cashmere, silk or structured wool should be dry-cleaned by a specialist. Store in breathable garment bags. Handle silk blouses with clean hands and avoid contact with perfume or cosmetics.
