Discover our carefully curated selection of secondhand mules: flat and heeled mules, square-toe styles, embellished and feathered designs, architectural platform mules and rare archive pieces from the world's most celebrated houses. Every piece is hand-evaluated by our team on avenue Louise and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Because the mule is not a sandal and not a pump — it is its own distinct design proposition, and in the right hands one of the most sophisticated and most wearable shoes in the luxury archive.

The mule in fashion history: from boudoir slipper to the defining shoe of a generation

The mule a backless shoe that covers the toe while leaving the heel entirely exposed — has the most complex and contradictory history of any shoe category: it has been at various moments the most intimate (the bedroom slipper of 18th-century France), the most provocative (the Marilyn Monroe heel in which the absence of a back strap enforced a particular walking gait), and in recent years the most broadly influential shoe in contemporary fashion. The decade of the 2010s and early 2020s was, more than anything else, the decade of the mule: from Bottega Veneta's padded leather slides to The Attico's sculptural block-heel construction to Celine's square-toe flat mule under Phoebe Philo, the mule became the shoe that every designer returned to as the clearest expression of a specific contemporary attitude to dressing.

The mule's versatility across formality levels is part of its appeal: the same basic construction — a covered toe, an exposed heel — can produce the most casual flat slide and the most formal heeled evening mule, and the distance between these two poles is traversed with a continuity of design logic that no other shoe category quite matches. In the vintage market, this range means that our mule selection encompasses pieces from the most practically wearable to the most dramatically statement-making in our entire shoe collection.

Our mules categories

Flat leather and suede mules

The flat mule — particularly in the square-toe configuration that Celine's Phoebe Philo made iconic, or in the minimal slide format that Hermès has produced in premium leather for decades — is one of the most practically useful and most easily wearable pieces in our vintage shoe selection. Archive Celine square-toe mules from the Philo era are consistently among the most sought-after pieces in our entire shoe selection.

Heeled mules

The heeled mule — combining the visual impact of a heel with the ease of a backless construction — has been a recurring fashion proposition from the classic kitten-heel mule of the 1950s through to the contemporary block-heel constructions of The Attico and the stiletto-heel versions of Manolo Blahnik and Aquazzura. Archive heeled mules from Gucci, Saint Laurent and the great Italian and French houses define this category's most collectible tier.

Padded and quilted mules

Bottega Veneta's padded mule — Daniel Lee's most immediately recognised design, with its cushioned leather upper and deliberately casual silhouette — became one of the defining shoes of 2019–2021. First-season examples in the original colorways are among the most actively traded luxury footwear pieces on the secondary market.

Embellished and feathered mules

The Attico's feathered and sequined mule, The Attico's Devon block-heel, Gucci's embellished evening styles and the most decoratively ambitious mule designs from across the luxury footwear spectrum represent the category's most visually dramatic tier. Early-season examples from The Attico and Gucci are particularly sought-after.

Platform and architectural mules

The platform mule — raising the entire foot on a substantial sole unit rather than simply the heel — occupies the most architecturally ambitious position in the category. Archive platform mules from Gucci, Prada and the 1970s Italian houses, alongside the most ambitious contemporary constructions of Rick Owens and the Belgian avant-garde, define this category's outer limits.

How to evaluate a vintage mule

Evaluating a vintage mule requires attention to several combined criteria. Here are the 7 checkpoints we systematically verify in our atelier on avenue Louise.

1. The label and authentication

Every mule carries a verified attribution on the insole or footbed, with any hardware or embellishment authentication markers cross-referenced against our database.

2. The upper material and condition

The upper of a mule — the vamp and any connecting strap or construction — is assessed for leather quality, suppleness, colour evenness and any cracking or delamination. For embellished uppers, the condition and security of decoration is specifically assessed.

3. The backless construction condition

The backless construction of a mule places all retention on the front of the shoe, making the vamp's fit and the integrity of its construction particularly critical. We assess whether the vamp retains its original shape or has stretched or distorted from previous wear.

4. The heel or platform condition

For heeled mules, we assess the same criteria as for pumps and boots: heel tip condition, structural integrity and any lean. For platform mules, the integrity of the platform construction and any delamination between layers are specifically assessed.

5. The sole condition

Sole wear pattern and any previous resoling are assessed as for other footwear categories, with particular attention to the heel area, which receives concentrated impact in backless footwear.

6. The footbed and insole condition

The footbed of a mule — visible in wear — is assessed for cleanliness and condition. Footbed imprinting from previous wear is assessed for its likely impact on fit and comfort for a new owner.

7. The overall condition and wearability

We assess and honestly grade the overall condition, with particular attention to whether the vamp has retained its intended shape and whether the mule is genuinely wearable by a new owner or primarily collectible.

Our method: at Les Enfants d'Édouard, every mule undergoes a three-stage examination — visual inspection, technical verification (authentication, upper, heel/platform, sole, footbed) and wearability assessment. Every authenticated piece comes with our certificate of authenticity.

Sizing notes for vintage mules

Mule sizing requires particular attention to foot length and vamp fit. For flat mules, many wearers size up half a size to prevent the toes from extending beyond the vamp edge. For heeled mules, sizing follows the same logic as pumps. Padded and soft leather mules (Bottega Veneta style) conform to the foot with wear; structured and stiffer mules are less accommodating of different foot widths and require more careful size assessment.

Why invest in vintage mules

Vintage mules represent one of the most compelling current opportunities in the luxury shoe secondary market, driven by the extraordinary cultural impact of the mule category in the 2010s and 2020s. Bottega Veneta padded mules from Daniel Lee's first seasons, Celine square-toe flat mules from the Phoebe Philo era, The Attico Devon mules from the first collections and the archive heeled mules of Gucci and Saint Laurent all represent pieces with both genuine design significance and strong daily wearability — the combination that creates the most enduring secondary market demand.

Care and maintenance of vintage mules

For leather mules, store with the toe stuffed with acid-free tissue paper to maintain the vamp's shape. Clean with a soft cloth and condition periodically. Pay particular attention to the vamp leather at points of flex, which benefit from regular conditioning.

For embellished mules, store individually in dust bags. Handle feathers and embellishment carefully — feathers can be gently steamed back into shape if compressed during storage.

For suede mules, brush after each wear and protect with suede spray. Store away from moisture and sunlight.
